i'm planning to buy a camera and i don't know what brand to buy
in your opinion, which brand is better?

Sony, Nikon and Canon all make good cameras. If you are going with an SLR, Sony's body has built in (IS) image stabilization, but if you want IS with Canon, you have to buy a lens that has IS. Therefore you end up paying more per lens. Canon has more lenses to choose from and has been in the business of making cameras longer...they know what they are doing. I have a Digital rebel SLR and now a Canon 50D and love both cameras. I would not consider trading them for anything other than a full frame SLR. Do research on lenses also. Digital SLR sensors are so good now that a kit or cheap lens is a handicap to a camera.
Read reviews... I recommend and would not buy a camera from anywhere other than B&H photo or Adorama. Read the reviews of the cameras at their websites and look at the negative reviews..not just the positive reviews. Do not buy a camera from anyone that is selling it cheaper than the above two sites...if you see a cheaper camera in magazines or online...it is too good to be true and you will be scammed.
Also consider what type of camera you want. A large SLR with a bag full of lenses=you will be carrying around a backpack if you want to take pictures. You can get a good quality small point in shoot that you can keep in a pocket or purse and always have with you.
EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR Camera might be a good first choice if you are starting out with SLR's.

High quality adjustable canon camera lens?

Ok I'm gonna be getting an Eos 50d and I need a very good adjustable lens. any ideas?
ok well i need a lens that has a very wide range, like 28-135mm or greater. I'm planning to photograph just about everything from people to nature to city. For price range it will depend on the quality and range of the lens. I guess somewhere between 300-600 dollars or so.

If you are buying your first DSLR, it may help to know the 50D is available in a kit that typically includes a high quality zoom lens. The kit lenses offered with the 50D are a step above the basic 18-55mm zoom lenses typically sold with the digital Rebel kits.
The classic zoom lens kit for the 50D includes either the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM or EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens. Between those two lenses, I personally prefer the 17-85mm because it provides a wide-angle to medium telephoto zoom where as the 28-135mm is kind of a "normal" to telephoto zoom that isn't always practical for group shots in close quarters. Neither of these are the "best" lenses Canon makes. For that, you need to plan on potentially pending more for a lens than you paid for the camera.
Sometimes, 50Ds are also sold in a 2-lens kit. The second lens is typically a telephoto zoom that offers greater magnification or "reach" than the kit lens. Most such kits include the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom. For the money, this is one of the best telephoto zooms made. In this class of lenses, the next step up is Canon's EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L-series lens.
Beyond a good general purpose zoom and a telephoto zoom as described above, we'd need to know more about what you plan to photograph before recommending other lenses. As noted, Canon makes more than 60 different lenses. There are lenses for almost every conceivable purpose and usually several models of similar type but built for different budgets. The L-series lenses are considered professional grade lenses but not everyone needs to spend the money required to buy such lenses.
