i have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH1 digital camera. i love to take macro. but my camera has only 3x zoom on macro mode and am unable to get the kind of close-up image i want. my nokia 5800 phone has better zooming though the pictures aint sharp. i wont be able to buy a better cam at the moment...so am stuck with this. any tips on how to make the best of my cam when taking macro?? thanx in advance

Every lens has a limit (its not the camera) to the maximum magnification. There is really little else you can do. Shoot at the highest resolution and crop later if you can to bring it in but even in macro mode, there will be strict limits on how close you can get to an object before your lens can no longer focus.

I am looking to purchase a digital camera for an upcoming trip and consumerreports.org recommended the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30K (Top 3 choice); it has received a lot of reviews, but according to Circuit City it has been discontinued. Their next suggestion is the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80; which is comparable to the Panasonic, but it does not have a wide angle lens.
I am leaning heavily toward the Panasonic model; but I wanted to get an opinion or two from people who might know something about these models or subcompact cameras in general.
Quick background: Small photography background, would use camera for social events and trips.

Look here for another Panasonic ... they use Leica lenses .. a big plus.

If the Sony does not have the wide angle lens feature, then it is NOT comparable.
The Panasonic uses the standard SD memory card and the Sony a propriatary Memory Stick .. again not comaprable to the Panasonic. I wonder if the sales person at Circuit City was going to get a bonus for all the Sony's he/she sold.
BTW the camera you want may have just been out of stock. It is less than a year old and most compact digital cameras are made for at least a year to eighteen months per model. The next choice would be the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55. It too has the 28mm wide angle lens
