I've bought a used Canon CL 8-120mm f1.4-2.1 off eBay. I knew it would not mount on my DSLRs but since it was 16 pounds total I said I'd take him and figure out something to do with it.
It seems that the lens needs to be mounted on its camera for the aperture to open even a little bit so there's not much I can do with it now.
Any smart ideas besides taking all the optics out and turning it into a fancy mug ? :)

what you have is this lens that was supplied with the Canon L1 (or L2) Hi8 Camcorder. it is designed for a 1/2 inch format CCD. when Canon came out with the XL1 miniDV Camcorder, they changed the CCD to 1/3 inch format, so the older interchangeable lenses became obsolete. While the Hi8 tape quality stinks, the L1 was actually a pretty nice analog video camera but not worth buying even on eBay. unfortunately the lens does not work with any other canon or other brand cameras. Since it is a video lens, the iris caps to protect the imager when off.
15 pounds is a pretty substantial paper weight.

should i get my dad a digital camera for his birthday?

i don't like asking my parents what they want for holidays and birthdays because i feel like it ruins the suprise and they say they like to be suprised with what their present is (though their parents so of course they're gonna say that). anyway, my dad's birthday is in may and i was thinking about getting him a digital camera. i have one, i gave my old one to my mom, but he still uses a film camera. he loves taking pictures at family events, vacations, etc. we have tones of photos stored in boxes in the closet because of him. so i was thinking maybe getting him a digital camera just to update things? he will turn 66, he's pretty good with technology (works with computers everyday). also what we be a good quality camera to get that's under $100. maybe around 70ish? i'm only 15 and have so much money saved, and its for college mostly sooo....
and yes my dad is 50 years older than me, im 16 in july. but i dont care cause i love him <3 thanks!~

If your dad is used to a film camera (I'm assuming a SLR...interchangeable lens type), I don't think you will find a decent digital camera that will compare to that for $70-$100. For something comparable to using a SLR, the cheapest would be a "bridge" camera (like the Canon G12/SX20IS/etc.). Perhaps your mom would help buy it for him (as a gift from both of you).
What about getting him other photographic related stuff instead of a camera?
