canon dslr portrait lens image
.
I have a canon rebel xs (dslr) and it came with these kit lens 18-55mm, and sometimes, it doesn't seem like they take really great photos. My photos don't pop as much. Is it the lens or is it me?
If its the lens, what lens should I consider?
Oh, btw, I like taking portraits and landscapes.
Most of my photos are outdoors, in all times of day.
If it's me, then what am I doing wrong?
Kevin, I take a lot of photos during the sunrises and sunsets.
I'm wondering if it is because I do not use a tripod?
Answer
Lenses are very important. More so than the body.
Kit lenses are cheap and therefore not the best but before investing in better lenses which can cost an arm and a leg, you need to be sure your photos are not really great because of the lens rather than because of you.
In the age of digital photography, good lenses will be with you forever (unless you break them) but bodies will last only a few years. So which do you think is better to spend money on?

Which is the best landscape photography lens for canon DSLR cameras?
What are the differences between the canon 18-55mm lens, canon 50mm f/1.8 lens and canon 55-250mm lens?
Also, Which one is the best to use for landscape and group photography?
Thanks in advanced!
Answer
18-55 is a wide to normal angle lens. Can be used to shoot landscapes at wider angles and just general shooting throughout the range.
55-200/250 is a normal to telephoto zoom lens. Can be used for general shooting, portraits, some wildlife-especially captive animals.
The 50/1.8 can be used for general shooting but also makes a good portrait lens and indoor/low-light lens because of the large max aperture. Would be good for group portraits.
