Canon is better because they have a faster autofocus system and better performance at high ISO.
If youre talking a real canon 300 "L" lens then you definitely need a better camera. lol
if you're talking about a 70-300 or similar the canon will perform best, but if you plan to only shoot a specific event think about renting a lens from one of the dozens of camera rental websites. You can get some real "L Glass" at a daily or weekly rate (maybe $50-100 for a week)
Plus, you'll look really official while shooting.
