I have got a Panasonic Lumix G1, and have been trying to find a macro lens for it. i know Leica have brought one out, but its way too expensive. i was looking at some lens kits, but i'm not quite sure how they work - where do they go? is the quality any good? do they do any damage to the camera or the lens? how do they actually work?

right now i've got the 14-45 mm lens that came with the camera.

Answer
Hi! please don't bother buying any Lens kits from Leica, Canon, Nikon, sigma or any other brand apart from Panasonic. Your camera is a Panasonic, so you need to buy a Macro lens from Panasonic as well. They are called "kits" when there is more than one physical product. So if you have a lens + some filters and a lens hood its a "kit" or a bundle. They don't do any damage to the camera at all unless you are overly careless and attach them wrongly or too vigorously.

There are two sorts of Macro lenses that you can get:
1) An actual lens that goes on your camera body instead of your existing lens, (http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-panasonic-45mm-f2-8-leica-dg-macro-micro-four-thirds-lens.htm is one of them)

2) a lens adapter that screws on top of your existing lens and allows you to focus on much closer objects. These are much cheaper and generally worse quality. You also have to make sure that you buy one that has the same thread as your lens (if your lens has a thread that is) so my canon lens has a 58mm female thread, I would need to look out for a macro lens adapter with a 58mm male thread. here is an example: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MACRO-Close-Up-Lens-kit---Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-G1--_W0QQitemZ270624244291QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=209922589162&rvr_id=209922589162&cguid=0bb4f2f412e0a47a2f4490c4fe8c2651

Good Luck!

What are your opinions on the Panasonic DMC lumix fz18?

Krystin

I have an older model now and am in love with the leica lens which is why I decided my next camera would be the fz18. What are your opinions also, what does everything stand for? Just out of curiosity. The good and bad, and if you know of the best places to buy it in Miami that would be extremely helpful too.

Answer
It has a lot of great features and the price is right for the features included
