So, i'm thinking about going to school and starting a career in professional photography. My favorite brand of cameras (aside from the old school Pentax) are Nikon and Cannon. Which in your opinion is better?

The first thing you need to do is find out what kind of camera you will need for school.
Do you need a 35 mm SLR and a standard zoom lens?
Do you need a 4x5 view camera?
Do you need a dSLR a step above the entry level cameras ($1,000)?
If you need a dSLR, look at the Nikon D90 or Canon 40D (the Canon 40D out performs the 50D)

If you need a 4x5 view camera, you may be able to buy one from a graduating student
As far as which camera system is best, that has to do more with your intended future use, after school
If you are planing on shooting under low light conditions, at this time the best camera for shooting under those situations is the Nikon D3s. That means you would want to buy some kind of Nikon camera and start building your system while in school so when you finish, you will be well on your way to having a system you can put to work as a pro.

Nikon or Canon cameras?

I have a Canon PowerShot S5IS 8.0 Megapixels. and A Canon Speedlite 420 EX TTL.
I want to Upgrade to something more advanced.
But I think i would want to go with Nikon.
Which is a better Brand of Camera Nikon or Canon?
And.
What Camera to you recommend? (That's under $800.00)
(Ex: Nikon D40?)

If you stick with Canon you will be able to use your Speedlite with it.. if you go with Nikon you'll need to replace it.
The Canon owners will all say Canon is better and Nikon owners will say Nikon is better. It is all a matter of personal preference.
I'd suggest looking at the Canon XS or Canon XSi with the kit lens. Both are in your price range and are both excellent cameras.
go to http://dpreview.com and check both out, and compare them side by side, read the reviews and look at the sample photos. compare them with the Nikons in the same price range.
Then go to a real camera store, not Best Buy or Wal Mart and handle the different cameras and get a feel for them, then buy the one which fits you best.. Both brands are excellent.
